Insurance
Make sure your contractor has the proper insurance. If necessary call his insurance company to make sure it is still in effect. If he has employees, make sure they have workers comp insurance. In many states if there is at least one employee, then workers comp is required. Many companies skip this insurance because of the added expense. Sometime if a sole owner needs help he will pay someone cash……lawsuit waiting to happen.

Some contractors will use www.AskTheSeal.com which is a service that provides photo ids, conducts criminal and sexual predator background checks, and verifies insurance.

Referral Websites
There are 3rd party referral sites like Angies List, Home Advisor, Thumbtack or Porch. They may conduct a background check on a business owner – but not on employees. They also don’t verify insurance. They also use websites that list top ten “contractors” for a service. You then fill out a form and a few contractors that have paid for that lead will contact you. They do not show how the gutter cleaning is done. They may also offer “deals” which are at a low price and which the contractor only gets a small portion. That encourages a cheap and unsafe service.

Qualified Contractors
